Addison's Story

We wanted a child more than anything and went through
fertility treatments and were finally blessed with a pregnancy and twins!
Riley (twin B) was suffering from low amniotic fluid and chronic placental
abruption. Against all odds, the twins continued to grow and thrive week
after week. At 24 weeks and 6 days gestation, Addison Mackenzie Gile was
born at 1 pound 9 ounces and 13 inches & Riley Parker Gile was born at 1
pound 7 ounces and 11 inches. Riley passed away in our arms after 4 hours;
he was too tiny and too sick to survive. He became Addison's guardian angel.

Addison was transferred to, what is now, Lurie Children's Hospital over 50
miles away from our home. Addison faced many challenges while she was in the
hospital, had many surgeries and was not expected to make it. Through
Addison's journey she fought adamantly for her life and she continues to
demonstrate significant struggles to do the simple things in life. Despite
her ongoing struggles she overwhelmingly shares her happiness and love of
life with us every day!

Addison has taught us so much more than anything we could ever learn in a
classroom. She's taught many people, especially us, unconditional love, extraordinary
patience, amazing commitment, simple joys, inconceivable determination,
awareness in things we would have continued to dismiss, an ongoing promise
to raise that awareness for others, kindness beyond words, to not take
anything for granted, the ability to truly believe that everything happens
for a reason, to understand words spoken through smiles and hums, to know
that every little milestone is a miracle, and that love, positive thinking
and a little help from a guardian angel can change the world.

Addison has given us opportunities, opportunities to find our passion in
life and through her determination she has taught us to never give up hope!
Today, Addison is a 6 year old Kindergartner and a little spit-fire!  She is
what we call a "tomboy-princess" - she loves all things creepy crawly but
must be in a dress and bows with her nails done!   Her favorite
things are reading, art and music.
