Brittany's Story

Brittany lost hearing in one ear at about age three. We don't know why. The nerve died. She told us she needed to start using her new ear, not her old ear. Brittany then seemed like a pretty healthy child up until several years ago. She had a track injury and had to have and MRI. The MRI showed she was born with a tethered cord. She was not showing any signs of problems then, but we were told by the neurosurgeon what to look for in the future. Just over a year later Brittany started having problems holding her urine. She also had 3 UTI's in six months. We got really worried when she started falling. When I saw that happen, I asked her what was going on. She told me she felt numb in her left leg. I called the neurosurgeon right away. She was scheduled for X-rays the next day. We found out Brittany was loosing feeling in both legs and had lost most of the use of her bladder. She went in for tethered cord surgery on 1/17/2012. She was in ICU four days and then a regular room for two days. She did get the feeling back in her legs. She has not regained full use of her bladder (neurogenic bladder). In 2011 she had her appendix removed due to severe abdominal pain and vomiting. The appendix looked good. In May of 2012 Brittany was back in the hospital for a week with those same symptoms and liver enzymes out of whack. The doctors couldn't find anything wrong, but said if it continued to happen it would be diagnosed as cyclic vomiting syndrome. Brittany has been admitted 9 times with the same symptoms since May of 2012, from 3 to 7 days each time. She has had to have NG feeding tube at one time. She is at the ER often to receive IV fluids and meds.
