Jacob's Story

Jacob was born premature at 30 wks and 3 lbs.  He spent 6 weeks in the NICU at University of TN in Knoxville.  He surprisingly had no issues in during his stay except he needed help eating. He didn't even require oxygen!  He was just too small and weak to eat a sufficient amount.

For the next 2 years, Jacob was the poster child for health.  He hit all his milestones and was growing into a perfect toddler.  The only time he was seen by his pediatrician was for his immunizations.  At 2, Jacob started having frequent ear infections.  He was having 2 a month.  Finally, in June 2013, he had surgery to remove his adenoids and place tubes in his ears.  NO MORE INFECTIONS!!  Everything was going great.

In September 2013, Jacob occasionally complained of right shoulder pain over the course of a couple days.  I work with an orthopedic surgeon so I took Jacob in just to get it checked out.  We all thought it was just a sprain.  Was told to come back if no better over the weekend.  The next week, it was no better, maybe even worse.  We noticed a "lump" on Jacob's shoulder blade.  I took him back to the doctor.  We had xrays done that morning and by that afternoon we were being referred to a pediatric orthopedic doctor in another town and was told it looked like it could be malignant tumor.  From there we were referred to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.  After a week of grueling tests, the diagnosis was in....Jacob had Stage 4 Neuroblastoma with primary tumor on his adrenal gland and metastasis to his arm, legs, shoulder, skull and bone marrow.  To date he has had 2 rounds of chemo with several months of treatment remaining.  The lastest tests show that the cancer is responding very well to treatment, but Jacob still has a long road ahead of him.
