Trevor's Story

Trevor was born in the summer of 2005. At first everything was perfect! After a few hours the nurses noticed Trevor still had blue extremities. He also had a hard time eating. So the nurse took him down to the NICU for observation. My husband and Dad went with Trev while everyone else stayed with me. At first we were told not to worry that sometimes newborns need a little help with breathing at first and he should be right back in our room. Well, a couple hours later my Dad came into my room and the look on his face I knew it was not good. He told me something was wrong with Trevor's heart. Shortly after that the Dr. came in and said Trevor had to be transported to our local Children's Hospital right away. The next morning he had his official diagnosis. Pulmonary Atresia W/IVS. He would stay in the hospital in the ICU for that first week undergoing his first heart cath at 2 days old to put a stent in his PDA and to open up his pulmonary valve. His right ventricle was also a little small and they were hoping it would grow a little before his first open heart surgery.

Trevor had weekly cardiology appointments for awhile and struggled to gain weight. After a couple months he got the idea he needed to eat and started to gain weight! At 3 months he went back into the hospital to have another heart cath and to reopen his PDA and Pulmonary valve. This worked for another 6 months and he continued to gain weight. He was a little slow on developmental milestones but other than that we was happy and content and the joy of our lives! At 9 months old he had open heart surgery and they removed his pulmonary valve and conduit and scraped out his right ventricle as it was muscle bound. The right ventricle did grow some so that was great news! Trevor had a lot of complications after surgery and spent a week in CICU before spending another week on the recovery floor! He had blood transfusions, unexplained fevers and could not keep food down. It was a very stressful time! But eventually he came home. After a few months at home he still had no interest in talking or walking so he started physical therapy and speech. He finally took his first steps at 16 months and had 6 words at age 2.

Trev has continued to do well and now you would never know the struggles he had when he was younger. At almost age 5 he had another heart cath to close an ASD in his heart. We never noticed that his energy level lagged behind until after he had this last surgery! Trevor is now 8 years old and doing wonderful in school! As of now he swims, plays basketball and soccer. He does not let any of this get him down! He is currently waiting for his next surgery which he will get a new pulmonary valve and conduit.
